Good story. Good characters. Worth a watch. A more fleshed out back story on the main character would have been nice. Although there were hints that the viewer is supposed to piece together. I never was completely sure what had transpired to make him such a controlling figure. The movie is more about dealing with the repercussions of the personality traits he had developed.
Another director waiting in Purgatory for a future rediscovery: Delmer Daves. The evidence being the poor Warner Archive collection copy available nowadays. In Pan & Scan. May Delmer Daves's revenge be harsch and implacable when our beloved critics will finally appreciate the divine high-angle shots that The Hanging Tree offers to the few chosen ones who love him now. Watch this movie with your Bible at hand. AAA.
