Our take

Before Nosferatu, Murnau approached the horror genre with this mysterious, moody drama. Out of circulation for decades, The Haunted Castle has been recently re-evaluated as a crucial step in Murnau’s prodigious career: its nightmare sequences are some of the spookiest in silent cinema history.
