Ratings & Reviews

  1. J.J. 'Jake' Gittes's rating of the film The Hi-Lo Country

Two stories: 1- Cowboyism at it's end; farming at the edge of industrialisation; 2- passion & love of two guys for the same woman. None of the two is properly told. The movie lacks emotion & gets boring quickly. The performance of the cast isn't good either. Crudup & Cruz's inner struggles never show the pain & heartbreak the narration calls for. Arquette not bitchy enough & Harrelson a caricature. Unconvincing.

  2. Daniel S.'s rating of the film The Hi-Lo Country

A masterpiece nobody seems to have ever heard of. Stephen Frears's best movie. OK, right with The Grifters. Produced by Martin Scorsese. Harrelson and Crudup as the last cowboys, Patricia Arquette as the ultimate slut and Penelope Cruz as ... Penelope. Indispensable.
