Satyajit Ray India, 1984

João Eça's rating of the film The Home and the World

A film doesn't need comparison to be judged. Indeed "Charulata" is similar and better. Yet, I will not forget several of this film's scenes or shots, as they share a psychological quality rare in any style of making cinema. Ray's abuse of zooms or voice-off reflects some indolence, but the lightning, the laconic use of sound, the direction of actors, the abstract nature of space or the humanity of all characters win.
