Along with Mario Bava,Riccardo Freda is one of the masters of Italian Gothic Cinema. What the film may lack in horror or suspended is made up for in perversion and atmosphere.Scripted by the great Ernesto Gastaldi, the storyline is Poe meets du Maurier,"Tomb Of Ligeia"meets"Rebecca",with a good dose of Hitchcock thrown in(the milk sequence is pure"Suspicion"!).Add into the mix Scream Queen Barbara Steele for a classic.
This feels like an Italian gothic horror of the period as directed by GEORGES FRANJU. Its more in line with his "horror in homeopathic doses" and would make a stunning double with LES YEUX SANS VISAGE. More low key than most such films and more powerfully suggestive. The extreme nature of the story seems to be almost elusive, so that afterwards I wonder if I dreamt it all. This is transgressive art at its best.
