An exquisite comedy, but it’s not in the least sentimental – indeed it’s part of its general intelligence that its villain should remain unrepentant. . . . Fogel is last seen sitting hunched over a table, glaring defiantly at his persecutors. Whether we like it or not – and we do like it – his cussedness has a kind of integrity.
