Labelled a Red, Kaji is sent to the Japanese army and is mistreated by the vets. He witnesses cruelties in the army and revolts against the abusive treatment spent on the recruit Obara; he also sees his friend Shinjô Ittôhei defecting to the Russian border.

Kaji's humanist vision of a peaceful and just world is given a second major blow as his self-sacrificial tactics render him a martyr on behalf of his fellow soldiers in the Japanese barracks. Demeaned by the iron discipline of officers steeped in militarist ideology Kaji's soldiers become decimated by the Soviet army. Visually, slightly less majestic than pts I and III, its swamp sequence must have inspired Klimov.
