A great film based on a great book. Performances by Kidman and Hopkins are amazing. Some moments (when the main character is younger) don't work as well but the film doesn't fail to take its full dimension.
I’m really not sure why this intelligent and ambitious movie has been so under-appreciated unless it’s the sad truth we’re as closeted a society when it comes to class and racial politics as we were 60 years ago, when the main character, Coleman Silk, was a youth. The casting, acting and direction were outstanding, and the story is compelling. It deserves more attention.
Stop reading if you haven't seen. Hopkins plays a black man who can pass as white... confusing... exacerbated by how Hopkins is megaBritish compared to the actor who plays the character as a young man. Another ding: the story of Kidman's character isn't as fleshed out as I'd like. The narrative framing of the story is a bit off. Everything else works beautifully & I loved it with all my heart. Kidman is fantastic.
