New Blu-Ray Warner release that is undoubtedly one of the best releases of 2015. I won't quarrel over Charles Laughton's performance and Maureen O'Hara's beauty because you'll win. I'd just say that almost nothing of Victor Hugo's novel can be found here because this masterpiece was misrepresented in order to please the American audience. If you can bear this, you'll enjoy this film directed by German born Dieterle.
The great school of Max Reinhardt and the German Caligarism in one of its more refined cinematic expressions, with a huge Charles Laughton that, for sure - if that is possible - inspired John Hurt for his no less impressive performance as Elephant Man for Lynch. From the movements of the masses - as great as DeMille's - to the immense expressiveness of forms and spaces, a treaty of materiality.
