Oi tembelides tis eforis koiladas

Nikos Panayotopoulos Greece, 1978

dionysus67's rating of the film The Idlers of the Fertile Valley

A film of tremendous boldness. It captures the lethargic decline of a patriarchal family into a consumption of sleep and idleness. An allegory of aspects of Greek life, it aligns with European cinema's focus on self-referential milieux. Gorgeously shot (in slow pans and with great art direction) it features astonishingly "intense" acting by the lazy owners and the mesmerizing Olga Karlatos. A neglected masterpiece!
