Ratings & Reviews

  1. VincentVendetta's rating of the film The Illusionist

The Ilusionist is so focused on the idea "good ol' days" of cinema that it is condemned from the get-go to endlessly mention its main inspiration and to take refuge in the "cinema de qualité". It copies but never learns.

  2. msmichel's rating of the film The Illusionist

A wonderful yet bittersweet animated gem from Sylvain Chomet ('Triplets of Belleville') and team from a previously unrealized script by Jacques Tati. The illusion of magic to mask the tragic demise of vaudeville is well captured here.

  3. Graceful Photon's rating of the film The Illusionist

Does it preserve something of Tati's movies? Yes - the situations all do feel very Tati, but this is clearly no Tati picture. Tati's work always had an air of melancholy linked to modernism's obliterating approach, while this picture rather drowns in sorrow. Beautiful, poignant, sure, but unecessarily, exceedingly, unhelpfully maudlin; Chomet inserts the knife and then just keeps twisting it. Wouldn't recommend.

  4. Brian Ferguson's rating of the film The Illusionist

extremely quaint animation, reminds me of my early childhood in many ways, including the late fifties/early sixties Disney style

  6. luís debonoir's rating of the film The Illusionist

  7. David Sindmark Hörnfeldt's rating of the film The Illusionist

I see the theme of the film as of corporate takeover of art; the Beatles-like band and the cinema instead of the veritié acts, crafted with commercial appeal instead of love and care. How much can an artist take before selling his soul? The girl buys artificial images of womanhood and becomes less for it as well.

Seeing Mon Oncle was a lovely gift!

  10. Alvise Narduzzi's rating of the film The Illusionist

  19. redux's rating of the film The Illusionist

Tati never wanted you to see people as ugly or grotesque. He was all about understatement – something Chomet never heard of.

I'm sorry. I know what this film would like to have done, but I'm afraid it didn't. It didn't touch me at all. I found it dull, and a bit . . . pointless. The animation was good, but the story was obvious and uninteresting.
