So much great stuff in this film, but there's something disjointed about the way it was put together. Maybe the 2 and 1/2 hour version is missing something? Or maybe the editing is wrong? I don't know; there's something off about this film, which is almost great, goes all over the place without exactly taking us anywhere and then has a sudden ending which doesn't really feel like it wraps any of it up. An odd film.
The current 2.5 hour restoration is still missing about a half hour's worth of material, and the film does feel incomplete. There's a great deal to admire -- the brilliance of the production and Garbo's first great performance some fine moments of real power. Alas, the joylessness frankly gets tiresome before film's end.
