Robert Downey Jr. was acting his usual Broken Genius role. The drama itself wasn't solid enough, what with too focused on RDJ scenes instead of trying to tell what the story is about. In the end, it's the only decent--not great as usual--Robert Duvall that barely saved the movie (especially after the totally unnecessary, cringe worthy, Carla's side story...).
Some story beats regarding a broken father-son relationship successfully tug the heart, not least because of the powerful performances by Downey Jr. and Duvall, but the ridiculously overlong running time and the utter mediocrity of the images prevent it from reaching a step over a standard "TV drama of the week".
Stuffed with clichés. Your typical sob story, family/courtroom drama with dashes of humor. It's just too contrived and boring. It has a few good scenes, but I can't understand how it landed such a fine cast. Also, it drags itself for almost two and a half hours. What a waste.
