Originally intended to be included amongst the Czech New Wave’s manifesto based on the writings of Hrabal, Pearls of the Deep, “The Junk Shop” is actually a crude paper re-processing facility, and the interactions amongst it’s workers and patrons.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what’s now showing
The chaos of creation, Herz finds real beauty in the scrap heap. We see here that his cinema is one of play and innovation, an eye for aesthetics and disregard for tradition. It's a fairly delightful short, containing at least several excellent visual puns throughout its set pieces.
Although not being included into manifesto of New Vawe, this short movie stands out amongst the others. Two main characters, Milan Haňťa with his employer Bohouš represent two different poles, colliding at the very small area of junk shop. I like the moral of the movie, main characters and camera are fine, nevertheless it has very close to none climax and this complicates my overall experience.
