Quirky often verging on absurd minor effort which will anesthetize many, infuriate some & delight a few fans of the odd & freakish same-sex romantic melodrama. There's nothing that seems to pin this film down, nothing that confers some gravitas to it, however it's perhaps that hypnotic outlandish facade what keeps the viewer partially intrigued partially stunned until the end when it simply vanishes like nothingness.
A funny/strange little film! On paper sounds like it might be a male sexual fantasy but with its central protagonist a chubby, slightly vacant, gay man (with a very limited range of emotional expression) it ventures way off piste. I will be checking out Guiraudie’s other movies toute de suite. Where can I get some Doo-Root?
Brilliant little comedy. Brilliant characters. Deeply clever dialogue interspersed in south west France countryside people talk about agricutural machines, fancy illegal crops and family tensions. Also points of surreal dialogues buly the head cop. Really worth a watch.
File under: You can run but you can't hide. With a light touch and a clutch of clever conceits -- not to mention a wonderfully engaging cast -- Guiraudie has crafted a delightfully imaginative, on-target parable about the pleasures and longueurs both of being and trying not to be who you really are.
