  1. FISCHER's rating of the film The Lady of Musashino

  2. Howard Orr's rating of the film The Lady of Musashino

Even the very greatest make bad films, and "The Lady Of Musashino" takes its place alongside "Yokihi" as one of Mizoguchi's most strident works. But the moments of sadness, plus some exquisite camera work, help to at least partially counteract the melodrama and two-dimensional characters. Worth a watch alongside its older sister film, Hiroshi Shimizu's "Ornamental Hairpin" of 1941. 2.5*
