Ratings & Reviews

  1. Aardsy's rating of the film The Late Show

    Lily Tomlin is a treasure.

  2. SpacePirate's rating of the film The Late Show

Great fun, and a late 70s classic that time has chosen to largely forgot. Tomlin and Carney go together like bread and butter here, and have effortless chemistry and comedic timing. This is a throwback noir kind of film, ala The Cheap Detective or The Long Goodbye, with a great script and plot twists, but never succumbs to or goes overboard in pastiche. Carney's best 70s work other than Going In Style. 4.5 stars.

  3. Howard Fritzson's rating of the film The Late Show

3.5 stars. The personalities of the entire cast propel this dryly witty detective movie. All the actors are terrific. The movie has been elegantly shot as well.

  4. Steve G.'s rating of the film The Late Show

Starts off feeling like a noir pastiche but very quickly develops into its very own bitter-sweet crime tale, there's no doubt that the wonderfully unlikely double-act of Lily Tomlin and Art Carney is what really makes The Late Show tick over. However, the dialogue is marvellously sharp and funny, and Robert Benton's eye for detail is meticulous too. It's slightly fantastic, this film.

  5. NICOLE86's rating of the film The Late Show

Tomlin and Carney are a match made in heaven.

  6. Jaspar Lamar Crabb's rating of the film The Late Show

A truly great movie. Art Carney is a one-bit private detective hired to find the missing cat of flaky actress/talent agent/astrologer Margo (Lily Tomlin). They find the cat & end up in a thickly plotted murder mystery worthy of Dashell Hammett. Carney and Tomlin are a fun combination. Eugene Roche, Bill Macy & Ruth Nelson (as Carney's extraordinarily patient landlady) offer first rate support.

  7. Johnny DuBiel's rating of the film The Late Show

...why doesn't Robert Benton have a page here?
