Ratings & Reviews

  1. Diderot's rating of the film The Lawless

A perfectly pleasant leftist fable about journalism and race relations in California. It's also an important entry in the history of independent cinema.

  2. T. J. Harman's rating of the film The Lawless

If this film were made now or even 10 after it was made it would be a liberal critic's darling and an oscar contender. It's sad watching really old films that are more progressive than most of what you see today. But it was made in 1950 and is nothing more than a curiosity for Losey completests.Ancient left-agitprop that's datedness/sadly not so dated qualities are half it's charm, so r it's flaws as a 'message film"

  3. Daniel S.'s rating of the film The Lawless

The Lawless is the kind of film that reminds us that the veneer of civilization we are so proud of may quickly disappear in certain occasions. First class Gail Russell performance and some premonitary scenes if we examine Joseph Losey's future problems with the American anti-communist committee led by Senator McCarthy a few years later. Highly recommended.
