    A thoroughly accomplished, and minimalist in a sense, drama set in the dull deck of a lightship. The stasis of the ship is turned exquisitely by Skolimowski into a psychological index of the captain's secret past, which is painfully disclosed by the gentlemansesque mannerisms of a thug. As a closed system the ship turns into a jungle and the quietude of the finale into existential solitude. Superbly acted too!

    A compromised film - the faltering voices and b list supporting actors, the terrible score, the clumsy voice-over - but those compromises can't overweigh the clarity of the filming, the commitment of the central performances, and the crucial fact that more people should set movies on boats, god dammit.
