Ratings & Reviews

  1. David Sindmark Hörnfeldt's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

There are so many great visual ideas, but it compresses material that takes 8 hours to tell into two.

  2. MistaRichard's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

Just does not work in the slightest bit; it feels extremely unfinished, Bakshi's animation is completely stale or plain ugly, the colours feel out of place and the pacing is atrocious. Kind of goes to show how hard of a story LOTR is to adapt.

  3. Jérémy Poirier's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

Though I think Peter Jackson's trilogy (a masterpiece itself) is still the greatest adaptation of Tolkien's work, I find this version pretty interesting. Mainly because of the excellent use of rotoscope animation which creates beautiful, colorful and trippy scenes. Sometimes, everything turns to red for no reason. It has the characters and plot of "The Lord of the Rings" but I do feel that its true heart is missing.

  4. matelot's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

2.5 | Sì ma manca tutto il terzo libro....

  5. Mark O. Stack's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

There's so much going on here with a load of clashing styles of animation that make this one a real trip worth taking.

  6. Jack Marsden's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

Apart from being heavily unfinished and unarguably underdone in parts (though that may just be the inevitable subconscious comparisons to the modern versions) , this pre-Jackson adaptation is actually incredibly well animated and captivating. Though one does wonder whether Aragorn was initially written as a native American. 3.5/5

  7. Fabio Nosotti's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

  8. AdrianM.'s rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

Definitely not as grandiose, less Hollywood but darker and more cult, as it should be in order to retain the atmosphere of the book

  9. Katerina's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

  10. Juliet Benson's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

An early source of childhood trauma to which I unceasingly return. It sure as hell has atmosphere, unfinished and unfaithful to the source material though it was. It surely must be respected.

  11. Bernardo's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

I heard this is horrible... Well, it's only some two hours... I'd like to see it.

  12. Catarina C Gomes's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

There is a dubbed over version in youtube that is just delightful.

  13. Jinsie's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

A whole new level of audiovisual torture. Just from an animation standpoint, corners seem to have been cut at every available opportunity, as if they were drastically overstepping the limits of what could be achieved and panicked as the money ran out. Oddly, the sound mix is as ugly and drab as the colour palette; so just listen to the BBC's classic radio dramatisation produced around the same time instead.

  17. Eingya's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

This is actually really good. One of the most underrated animation movies of all time.

  18. Max the Movie Guy's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

The mo-cap in this film ain't got nothing on Weta Digital.

  19. Christopher R. Smith's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

Peter Jackson's epic trilogy will probably remain the definitive film adaptation of Tolkien's opus, but Bakshi's ambitious, if not completely successful, attempt is still worth a look. It does a good job of summarizing 'Fellowship of the Rings', but isn't as adept with 'Two Towers', when the plot gets incredibly muddled. But the animation is well-crafted, and the film retains a compelling atmosphere throughout.

  20. Sam Flemming's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

Definately worth watching. A good use of rotoscoping.

  21. mintghost's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

This was really good. I went on a Ralph Bakshi bender this weekend...and this really was much better than i thought it would be. I enjoy his animation, it's something a little different than the norm.

  22. babydoc's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

great animation. does the story justice imo.

  23. max magbee's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

An unfairly maligned film. Beautifully animated.

  24. Seth Farmer's rating of the film The Lord of the Rings

This is an interesting movie. When I actually read through the books now, John Hurt is the voice of Aragorn.
