A well known South Korean film director and his estranged wife are both kidnapped by North Korea only to be made to make films by Kim Jong-Il....some 17 films in less than 3 years. Their eventual defection asked the world to take them at their word on this however and director Shin's word here seems dubious at best. Well told documentary making use of Shin's films and recreations to tell a hard to believe tale.
An over-emphasis on a bombastic soundtrack in order to convey the tone. The audience do not need to be told what to feel - subtlety is far more effective in illustrating the horrors of totalitarianism.
I really enjoyed this movie and what a crazy/amazing story it was. I feel like it could've been a lot longer and perhaps focus some more on their falling in love again once they were both captured. Otherwise a wonderful documentary. I also highly recommend you check out the book as it goes more in depth.
