  1. FISCHER's rating of the film The Lower Depths

  2. Il secondo maestro del revolver's rating of the film The Lower Depths

  3. Kevin Costner's rating of the film The Lower Depths

Kurosawa released Throne of Blood and The Lower Depths in the same year, they're both absolutely fantastic, i think it proves how much of a genius Kurosawa was and proves why he is deemed by many to be the greatest director in cinema history....

  4. Aardsy's rating of the film The Lower Depths

    Kurosawa's bottle episode.

  5. Tibulle85's rating of the film The Lower Depths

  6. Michael Zyx MH Claes's rating of the film The Lower Depths

Talkative and boring filmed theater in a setting of the Stone Age, when there was only a roof with 1 hole to let the smoke out .... a kind of old Hatetful Eight without Morricone ------ Du théatre filmé bavard et ennuyeux dans un décor de l'âge des cavernes, quand on n'avait qu'un toit avec 1 trou pour laisser passer la fumée ... une sorte de vieux Hatetful Eight sans Morricone ...

  7. Henri's rating of the film The Lower Depths

  8. Ma-rewind's rating of the film The Lower Depths

  9. cyrikelly's rating of the film The Lower Depths

Film remarquable. Merci M. Akira Kurosawa.

  10. Ludovic72's rating of the film The Lower Depths

  11. RoRoRoro's rating of the film The Lower Depths

  12. John Baldwin's rating of the film The Lower Depths

This is greater as a work of cinema than the Gorky play is as a work of theater. The way Kurosawa stages and shoots the action and dialogue in two very small spaces without monotony is a miracle, and the ending of the film is superior to the playwright's preachy ending. Plus (except for Seven Samurai) A.K. *never* had a cast as great as this one (including lovely Kyoko Kagawa in her first Kurosawa film)!

  13. Howard Fritzson's rating of the film The Lower Depths

Very different from the Renoir. More ensemble, less star vehicle. Beautifully staged. Grim, though...and funny. I will probably have to see it again to formulate a solid opinion.

  14. TFCHooligan69's rating of the film The Lower Depths

Just watched this for the first time. Another excellent film from a masterful director. I've enjoyed this more than Renoir's 1936 interpretation of Gorky's play. A bleak and dark tale, for sure.

  15. joey Noodles's rating of the film The Lower Depths

I'm not kidding, that dance scene at the end is one of the funniest things I have ever seen! Other than that, a really good film, solid script filled with interesting characters and I really liked the fact it only used two locations. Although partially flawed it is still a very good film. 4/5

  16. Lorna Singh's rating of the film The Lower Depths

The great Kurosawa uses two locations, ensemble acting at its best and creative editing to involve us in this cruel, mostly hopeless world. Fun to see Toshiro Mifune (greatest screen actor ever) as a petty thief.

  17. A47's rating of the film The Lower Depths

This film proved to be too theatrical for me at the time of viewing. The themes and characters were intriguing, but I will have to watch again (less distracted) to fully comprehend the significance of this one.

  18. AKFilmFan's rating of the film The Lower Depths

Depressing, dialogue-heavy, & very captivating, this adaptation of Gorky's play makes 2 hours of miserable people talking in a limited space very exciting business. Kurosawa uses staging, blocking, & precise editing to capture all the misery & failed attempts at improvement of it's characters. Both a bleak drama & slight black comedy, Kurosawa's most restrained film is one of his liveliest character studies.

  19. Howard Orr's rating of the film The Lower Depths

A beautifully composed film, with thoughtful staging in depth and excellent characterisation. The bleakness of its vision is significantly at odds with the lighter tone of the -also excellent- 1936 Renoir version. Worth getting both films in the Criterion DVD set.

  20. Mugino's rating of the film The Lower Depths

I don't know how to rate Kurosawa films any more: it's simply not possible for them to be passable or below average (a 3-star or lower on my scale) but there are so many gradations of vision, skill and talent between the 4-star and 5-star. This is one of my least favorite selections from his filmography but there's a cynical wisdom driving it, conveyed through words as sharp as a tack.

  21. Francisco R.'s rating of the film The Lower Depths

There is a masterstroke to the movie in the way the characters are portrayed, where each one of them might represent a state of mind and the cast as a whole convey the primary spectrum of human emotions, completing the metaphor of the film as the tribulations of a single human mind, as a multidimensional ying-yang instead of several individual problems unrelated to one another. The lower depths of our own existence.

  22. Zachary Curl's rating of the film The Lower Depths

excellent film, excellent ending, though i don't find myself wanting to watch it very often. it's one of Kurosawa's movies that actually feels long to me.

  23. Mathew's rating of the film The Lower Depths

Love the ending. Sums up the movie so well with a perfect mix of comedy and tragedy.

  24. Franklinton Underground Cinema's rating of the film The Lower Depths

I have a similar love for this film, as I have for Hitchcock's "Rope". There is just so much to chew on and digest. Great writing and dialogue. Great adaptation.
