  1. Balthaz21's rating of the film The Machinist

  2. Wee Hunk's rating of the film The Machinist

It's hard to separate the facts of the making of the film from the film. If you go so far as to actually damage your body for a role, it is really worth it? So many crazy actors have done that, including Robert Redford. Is it really acting? Fassbender lost a lot of weight, but they also used makeup and he did it under medical supervision. As Laurence Olivier said to Dustin Hoffman, "Try acting dear boy".

  3. ceknklsn's rating of the film The Machinist

  4. richardlawrn's rating of the film The Machinist

bale's transformation is so fucking scary. the film has a haunting, heavy atmosphere, I felt like I couldn't move while watching it. loved it!

  5. soymilky's rating of the film The Machinist

  9. John's rating of the film The Machinist

Bale transforms himself from healthy man with mediocre acting skills, to really skinny man, with mediocre acting skills, in a product of its time plot, in all the wrong ways, with the same "mindfuck" you saw every other movie in the mid-2000's.

  10. Paula Rocha's rating of the film The Machinist

  11. ofNatalie LA's rating of the film The Machinist

A mystery which lethargically makes its way towards darkness. It has an economical script, which I always welcome, and it has Bale.

  12. Bill Boothman's rating of the film The Machinist

A psychological thriller in its purist form, The Machinist makes use of psychoanalytic concepts that some may appreciate such as projection, death drive, and psychosis. Repeat watchings of the film will reveal cinematic and editing techniques that expertly reinforce the narrative's incorporation of the aforementioned psychoanalytic concepts. This film is very nearly a simulation of dissociative identity disorder.

  15. pezfelinoespia's rating of the film The Machinist

  16. Savanna Ruedy's rating of the film The Machinist

The move is kind of drawn out. But I can't believe Christian Bale in this movie. Getting down to such a low weight to portray his character. Truly mind blowing performance.

  24. J. O.'s rating of the film The Machinist

My thoughts after a second viewing, a decade later, are that I am still impressed with Bale's dozy and manic performance, but that I am less impressed with the overall style. Sun-scorched oranges, blown out whites, and overcast greens - the aesthetic feels heavy-handed alongside the sort of tongue-in-cheek noir homage cues (namely the twinkling score and one-dimensional plot). Overall though, it's still a good film.
