O Mandarim

Júlio Bressane Brazil, 1996

José Neves's rating of the film The Mandarin

Bressane's stimulating pre-enunciation of his future path: a primitive cinema articulated with the shadows and sounds of a post-expressionism approach. In its own way, it's a film related with the sounds and visions of the German cinema from early 70's, mainly Robert van Ackeren, Schroeter or Daniel Schmid. And with the figurative freedom that Rouch brought to acting. Impressive, even if not completely accomplished.
