What are people saying?

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film The Monkey King

If the worst crime a film can commit is to be boring, then "The Monkey King" is at least sinless in that regard. But the fact that director Cheang Pou-soi lifts an underwater sequence from "The Phantom Menace" should clue you in that the movie favors candy-colored CG spectacle over telling a coherent story - or at least a story that would be coherent to foreign audiences not familiar with "Journey to the West."

  • THE APOLL0's rating of the film The Monkey King

This adaptation of the western translation of Journey to the West seems as if it uses the character pieces of Gilgamesh and Enkidu put together to form Wukong while the film resembles the story structure of Hellboy, and Spawn. Primordial Man-God-King on earth to find immortality and morally choose the fate of the universe. Promising set up; unfortunately the protagonist as no real character arc and does not change.
