Ratings & Reviews

  1. Post Ironic's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

It's a travesty that Boris Eustache won't allow this film to be restored. One of the best of all time.

  2. Warren Spratley's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

A rigorously structured portrait of post-May'68 French social & political attitudes, undoubtedly one of the most devastating films in cinema. There's not much to definitively say after only this single viewing, but Eustache is deeply concerned with the performative, w/ the particular ways style might frame, dissect, revolutionize social performance. Edith Piaf, Mozart, Proust, intellectual theatricality, despair.

  3. Marc St-Cyr (Death cinéphilia)'s rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

  4. Mohammad Hassan Movasagh's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

Des gens aussi beaux qu'un film de Nicholas Ray

  5. Tutu888's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

I wonder if anyone who consider this movie a masterpiece is able to watch it a second time!

  6. mauro's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

    masterpiece.....i'm destroyed.

  7. http://letterboxd.com/James_'s rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

In one of the grander movements of character in all of the cinema, we observe Alexandre's/Eustache's contrarian shit-talking casually undoing itself over the course of the film until in the end instead of sounding fresh and witty, it seems borne of desperation and emptiness and that desperation and emptiness comes to stand in for so much of the same feelings bound up in the failures of post-'68 France, […]

  9. sewslow's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

Kind of beating myself up for putting off viewing this for as long as I did. Throughout the entire 3 hours there is practically no absence of dialogue whatsoever. And what fascinating dialogue it is. With excellent characters. Léaud is perfect in this one.

  10. Puya Yazdi's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

Being shown at cinefamily (silent movie theater) in la next month. Cant wait, super excited to see this on the big screen.

  11. Sina Beheshti's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

  12. VENIMOS LOS JODIMOS Y NOS FUIMOS's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

Yo veo un pinche titulo asi, anunciado en la marquesina de un cine, y me cae que entro.

  13. hangtheguille's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

mi pelicula favorita! la mejor película de la historia? sí : )

  14. Patrick Humphreys's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

    Painfully pretentious. Overrated.

  15. scrocha's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

Pretentious for some. A masterpiece for others. I find it a really likable movie and not at all pretentious, maybe a little bit too long but a joy to watch. A cult movie would be a label more accurate, and is really hard to get a DVD copy since there are few releases available.

  16. efe's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

the quickest 210 minutes of my life..

  17. Jesse Furgurson's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

It sucks that this is pretty much what life is like, but on the other hand this is pretty much what life is like.

  18. Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

Jean Pierre Leaud is sensational! This beautifully captures what it means to be in the early ages of adulthood. Loved the tiny details of conversations Eustache focuses on... just brilliant!

  19. Kiko, um cronópio's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

As falas do Léaud são excelentes.

  20. João Eça's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

Three post-May '68 youngsters face the hangover of their lost dreams in one of the greatest achievements of art in representing the feeling of a time, place and way of life. Somewhere between Godard (Masculin Féminin) and Rohmer (any of his pictures) Eustache's style is still unique in its melancolich and tragic portrayal of life's relations with art, the failure to act, the search for truth, the void of existence.

  21. This is Jake Kath's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

They smoke, they fuck, and they talk. 3 1/2 hours of that and not a minute is dull. Yes, it focuses on the mundane details of life than anything else but there's a clear insight it that function that couldn't fit an overarching plot. These are college students from any campus. All misguided but contain a grace that shouldn't be ridiculed. There's so much to say about this movie and that's why I love it!

  22. Mathieu Boucher's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

"To speak with the words of others... that's what I'd like. That's what freedom must be."

  23. Starshine's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

long but not boring, not boring at all.

  24. Neither/Nor's rating of the film The Mother and the Whore

Françoise Lebrun is unrelentingly tragic in her final monologue, and through Eustache's framing one endures it like the suffering of a passion play. One can't help but read the film as a reconciliation with earlier revolutionary tendencies in society and cinema, the conundrum of living up to their contracts, and above all, the persistent anxiety of life in their aftermath. "There can be no improvisation."
