Who are the backyard abortionists of the future? A neat little tie-in to his underrated Consumed. Doesn't do much with its single location/shot/subject, but identifies some core Croney topics. Obviously the invasion of the body by a parasitic entity but also our (irrational?) fear of cohabitation. Parasites as institutions of their own, the conflict arises from our static view of the self.
Unconfortable and paranoid. Short but impressive work on the body, with the menace of something terrible about to happen. Cronenberg is good exploring obssessions with and about the human body. He is good making it feel like flesh, like it is about to be felt, in the flesh, in reality. He gives us the human body, paradoxicaly, with a sense of reality, through its obsessive, often deviant, depictions.
