It doesn't just mash-up 70s with crisp cinematography and digitized action scenes - story's progression and the use of violence wrapped with humor seems also as a well crafted hybrid of modern film and time capsule. Two leads revive some of the best buddy moments, with Crowe relaxing in what is probably his most funny role. Overstuffed plot comes as the only issue in what is otherwise pure and stylish entertainment.
looked like the plot, the banter, the jokes, the characters were heavily copied from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, it's like a lazy studio-demand reboot, a 93 minutes of déjà vu. It's sad, because Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling could be quite good in the movie--if they stop adding the (supposedly cute witty) little girl to every effin scenes.
Following the well-received dark comedy KISS KISS BANG BANG released back in 2005, Shane Black's return to directing a humourous flick injected with action is a success with THE NICE GUYS. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, both playing not-so-good-at-their-jobs private investigators, have fantastic chemistry with each other. Overall, it's an enjoyable homage to the 1970s. 4/5
