    Since middle-class bashing is something of a pastime for both director and writer, this should have been a bonanza (or jamboree more likely). Instead it's a ponderously laboured 'state of the nation' diatribe - the cracks appearing in the ceiling most crassly - and indulgently meta-fictional to limited effect. Why use a scalpel when a meat cleaver will do? A presage to Britannia Hospital - even more crudely sliced.
