It gets off to an underwhelming start, and goes soft towards the end - but when the complexities of the characters start to come out, it coalesces into a compelling look at the criminal justice system and the lives it effects. The cast is strong, with the notable exception of John Savage, who for some reason mumbles his way through his role.
