A rather mummified (all allusions intended) and flatfooted exercise from Hammer gobbling up yet another known ‘horror’ property which is steamrolled into tame, torpid stodge. The opera sequence is far too long; the casting either flat or yelled to the rear stalls; only the musty art direction catches the eye.
Falls flat on its face as a horror film and the ending is much too dragged out, but overall the changes to the original story work, making this Hammer's own independent mixture of the general themes. It's curious, though, how even Hammer wants to make the murderous Phantom more sympathetic (seriously, does everyone forget the hanging?).
