THE PHONOGRAPH

Le phonographe

Directed by Walerian Borowczyk
France, 1969
Animation, Short

Synopsis

An old phonograph assembles itself, plays songs on wax drums before self destructing. In many ways The Phonograph is a companion piece to Renaissance, there is nevertheless something quietly affecting about Borowczyk’s final ‘object’ animation.

Our take

Made just before the Polish master’s move into live-action features, The Phonograph packs its abstract, six-minute running time with haunting allusions to history, death, and memory. Rich in sensual tactility, Borowczyk’s ability to breathe life into his inanimate creations never ceases to amaze.
