Patricio Guzmán’s Le Cas Pinochet (The Pinochet Case, 2001) is more than just a coda to his epic La batalla de Chile (The Battle of Chile, 1975-79), it is a sober, dispassionate reminder that justice pursued is always more satisfying than justice deferred. The documentary is also a moving case study of how international law can empower individuals even where political circumstances appear to favour a moral amnesia towards bringing war criminals to justice.

What are people saying?

  • SiIencio's rating of the film The Pinochet Case

Chronicle of a futile attempt to bring Pinochet to justice. Interestingly it is suggested that the case was armed almost by fluke thanks to newly legislated Universal Law on Human Rights. It took the Establishment by surprise and triggered a new look at the unintended consequences of the law. The document is certainly poignant because of the frankness of the victims and will help to preserve their memory and dignity.
