The mystery of the tower serves a wonderfully romantic tale of sci-fi. The soundtrack accompanies the beautiful animations well, setting a timid, dreamy mood. The science is vague, almost fantasy-like, which fits the atmosphere but is often confusing. The social dimension of the film can also be hard to fully understand, but it's certainly not bad. Something tells me this film had more potential, but it was fun.
(Vu en DVD) En attendant "Your Name", je me fais une rétrospective Makoto Shinkai - réalisateur qui a, à mes yeux, aujourd'hui le plus de potentiel pour détrôner (enfin!) Miyazaki.
I wished it had been longer and had had better character design. Although this movie had a slightly better story than the other Shinkai's works. I only gave it four stars because of the scenery porn and Tenmon's music, which without them, this movie had probably been nothing.
This is Shinkai's weakest movie, but it still is an acceptable and okay movie. Before seeing Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below, I would have said that Shinkai can only do something that is in small bite-sized pieces instead of one feature-length narrative. I like to look at this as Shinkai's beta test into feature-length stories, he has definitely improved since then. Great visuals, but story is a mess.
