The movie is not about the princess and the men in her life, not even about a very bloody part of French history, but about enlightment and how out of place it is no matter in which historical era it happens. It is a story of history happening as it does, without taking sides, without a happy or else ending, simple narration with nice costumes, landscapes and actors. And a tortured Lambert Wilson, as he generally is.
What? An old fashioned costume drama that's actually good? It might as well have been based on a Stendhal story. It has all the right elements... Rich as it is in so many ways, it has a rather meek center. The princess doesn't quite convince, though her suitors are all ravishing, each with his own distinct style.
A film that tries to be everything without success. A cheap action film turns into a interesting moral tale before ending in a weak melo-drama...and it's too long ! There's no presence (from the actors) on screen and the music is excessive. Good ideas and beautiful landscapes are not enough to make a good film.
