Ratings & Reviews

  1. John Matrix's rating of the film The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex

A bit too many gaspy declarations of love for my taste. Davis is a great Elizabeth, but her emotional breakdown at the end strains belief and undermines the brilliant, ruthless tyrant image established earlier in the film. Flynn's Essex is a spoiled putz, which I guess isn't too far from the reality. Overbearing score. Fantastic costumes.

  2. Diderot's rating of the film The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex

I have a shameless love for this beautifully artificial historical melodrama starring a perfect Bette Davis and a delicious Errol Flynn. I could watch it over and over again to infinity.
