Definitely flawed, but has a unique allure to it, much of it from Nick Cave's script and soundtrack which are clearly not written by a filmmaker. This could have been jarring because the film feels quite detached from its characters, who are clearly defined but not given many scenes for us to become familiar with them, but it works in a strange, music-video-ish sort of way.
On one hand there is: Toughness. Death. Blood. Violence. Pain. Brutality. Insanity. Immorality. Disgust. On the other hand there is: Softness. Peace. Silence. Nature. Landscape. Sun. Heat. Dust. Flies. The blend of these elements & the switch from sentimentalism to sudden violence and vice versa keeps you going. Very good acting performances on all levels. An impressive movie. Masterpiece.
Great scripts are the ones that reveal their nature throught dialogue and strong characters, while displaying a sense of time and place and it just so happens Nick Cave's script is one of the best in recent years. Backed with an amazing cast (I mean just wow) and some solid filmmaking from Hillcoat it proves itself as probably the best recent western there is.

an extreme delicate western in Australia, powerful corrupted sound disturbance, cast is rightfully magnific.. additional feed back: David Gulpilil was on the scene as an aborigine and really popular on the AACTA red carpet.. I believe Australia is in a trend of facing imperial bad legacy since Yılmaz Erdoğan won the supporting actor by Gelibolu oriented movie with Russell Crowe!
The cinematography and soundtrack are absolutely beautiful. The acting? Well the acting is kind of campy. I'm not sure if its intentional, but I loved it. John Hurt's character was unforgettable. The flogging scene could stand alone and still be an impressive piece of film. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
