The first to die in an epidemic of meningitis in Vera Cruz is a French tourist. His wife Nellie, detached and indifferent, feels little grief and realizes that her coldness is her own doom. Over the next two days, she is attracted to George, who has his own dark secret.

Allegret depicts another depressed Frenchman, living in exile in Mexico, but the climate here is the opposite of the dismal grey of SUCH A PRETTY LITTLE BEACH. Both films are masterpieces of the atmosphere of place, enveloping you to such an extent, that the malaise of the characters infects the very air. But, these people are also drawn to this atmosphere.
