Satisfying court drama, even if losing some of it's well-held integrity by the end. Couple of characters, notably Rourke's and Glover's, seem somewhat unfinished. And even though the film doesn't venture too much into caricature and banal moralizing, one can't help to think how much better would this topic be explored in hands of someone like Lumet.
A "rainmaker" is a lawyer, who wins his case & achieves a payout. Once you know this, you know the movie. So, it is about other things (1) how he does it against all odds (2) about the questionable American system of justice (3) about moral value. There are a lot of cliches & stereotypes in this, but the excellent cast, the well constructed story (3 in 1) & a great director more than offsets them. Above average.
One of the most overlooked films of the 1990's, great performances from Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, Mickey Rourke, Claire Danes. Dean Stockwell (one scene only) and a surprisingly good performance coming from Jon Voight, one of his greatest from more recent films. The plot is very intriguing, interesting, it tells a lot about the judicial and lawyers world without being boring. A very agile Coppola!
