Horror film directed by Lew Landers (billed under his real name, Louis Friedlander) and starring Béla Lugosi as a Poe-obsessed mad surgeon with a torture chamber in his basement and Boris Karloff as a fugitive murderer on the run. After Edgar Allan Poe's famous homonymous poem.
Mad, bold, cheap and absolutely insane. Lugosi goes so majestically over the top as a Poe disciple years before Vincent Price would do so for Roger Corman. Has to be seen to be believed. Also responsible for banning horror film in the UK and effectively ending the Golden age of Horror. The best of the Lugosi-Karloff vehicles since THE BLACK CAT was so horribly and forever destroyed by insane cuts.
