The actors were fighting a losing battle, and it wasn't their fault. Direction, cinematography, scoring, sound, script, all of it was lacking in imagination, all of it was sadly conventional without even using the conventions to communicate. Nighttime, time for an owl to hoot, otherwise we might not notice the sun is gone. Heavy emotion, must be time for some lightning. Good intentions but no dreaming through form.
(4.5 stars) Powerful story.
Teenager Ashton Sanders (most recently starred in "Moonlight") is such a terrific young actor. Such strong emotional work.
The Civil War is merely the background for this movie's plot that is more of a tale of trust, love and finding your place in the world. It's also a coming-of-age story in a troubled world and class society.
Man, is this good.
Grim odyssey set during the Civil War. Well acted and beautifully photographed. Convincing story about a young man in need of the guidance of a father, trapped in a horrible moral dilemma. Heart-rending.
The actors were fantastic, especially Ashton Sanders, but I found the story and the direction to be lacking. Some of it was shot wonderfully, but most of the time, there was nothing to the image on the screen. Also, too much score. Could have used much less.
