Ratings & Reviews

  1. Eric Rucker's rating of the film The Retrieval

The actors were fighting a losing battle, and it wasn't their fault. Direction, cinematography, scoring, sound, script, all of it was lacking in imagination, all of it was sadly conventional without even using the conventions to communicate. Nighttime, time for an owl to hoot, otherwise we might not notice the sun is gone. Heavy emotion, must be time for some lightning. Good intentions but no dreaming through form.

  2. wgorans's rating of the film The Retrieval

The actors were fantastic, especially Ashton Sanders, but I found the story and the direction to be lacking. Some of it was shot wonderfully, but most of the time, there was nothing to the image on the screen. Also, too much score. Could have used much less.

  3. Corey's rating of the film The Retrieval

Moving at times, bland at others.

  4. Slappy McGee's rating of the film The Retrieval

(4.5 stars) Powerful story. Fantastic acting. Teenager Ashton Sanders (most recently starred in "Moonlight") is such a terrific young actor. Such strong emotional work. The Civil War is merely the background for this movie's plot that is more of a tale of trust, love and finding your place in the world. It's also a coming-of-age story in a troubled world and class society. Man, is this good.

  5. Robert H. Stevens's rating of the film The Retrieval

A brilliant film. So much complexity and sincerity is woven into this story about a conflicted young boy whose uncle has dragged him into a life full of betrayal and treachery.

  6. Saar's rating of the film The Retrieval

Nicely shot and well acted. The story though is a little weak. I'll skip the spoilers.

  7. David Richards's rating of the film The Retrieval

Grim odyssey set during the Civil War. Well acted and beautifully photographed. Convincing story about a young man in need of the guidance of a father, trapped in a horrible moral dilemma. Heart-rending.

  8. mpho3's rating of the film The Retrieval

Gorgeously rendered. I loved every moment of it.

  9. J.J. 'Jake' Gittes's rating of the film The Retrieval

Thriller? Dreamlike qualities? What?? Boring, more boring, most boring = The Retrieval. It's pain. Do not waste your time.

  10. muh.'s rating of the film The Retrieval

(3.5) slow-burner with dreamlike qualities that manages to use its simplicity as an asset.

  11. Carlos Filipe Freitas's rating of the film The Retrieval

“The Retrieval” is a slow-burning thriller whose simplicity of processes don’t remove the power of the plot. (3.5 stars)
