WHY did you have to ruin such a solid movie (The Ring) with this horrible sequel? I don't get it. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that the director just learned about special effects by the time he did this movie and got carried away. Geez, you're not Michael Bay.
It's interesting how they tried to delve deeper into Samara's origin. But when it was finally revealed, it's not interesting at all. The prologue scene felt so random and forced. Samara, the mysterious force in the first movie, became rather laughable here and only turned up to provide cheap jump scares. At least Naomi Watts, with her fabulous last line to Samara, makes this movie more bearable.
