For a film directed by a man mostly known as an editor, it sure feels like it needs a good reediting. Marques falls into the dangerous trap of loving his subjects and his footage a little too much. Apart from that, the film is a well-photographed and fascinating, if limited, observational piece. Despite this, it should never be appreciated as a comprehensive exploration of theater in contemporary Portugal.
A rare film in Portuguese cinema, because it aims to be an essay. Its director shoots very well, with wisdom and time, discovering a look in that gesture. However, the relationship between the different contexts, as well as the text off, are too disconnected from its ambition, revealing above all an irresolution. The latter frame-moment is absolutely extraordinary and could be a clue to the film that isn't.
