    Italian-language version of Chekhov's play (which he subtitled "A Comedy," though he seemed to be the only one who saw anything amusing in this story of artistic failure, loveless mothers, and thwarted ambition), with setting and Russian names intact. It's better than the Soviet version I've seen, a more cinematic version, even though that was a widescreen theatrical film and this is an academy ratio made-for-TV.
