The Second Night

La deuxieme nuit

Directed by Eric Pauwels
Belgium, 2016
Documentary, Avant-Garde

On the death of his mother, a filmmaker makes a film to see how much her disappearance has changed his vision of the world. It is an opportunity for him to look back over his relationship with her: a relationship that made him a free individual, as a man and as a filmmaker.

  • Mario Tomchev's rating of the film The Second Night

It meant a lot, as I even read that Pasolini poem to my mother's 60th birthday last year. I just wanted to wake her and tell her I love her so much last night after watching this "thank you" of a film essay. So I thank Eric Pauwels instead. And did tell her that today, by the way, and so should you. Too bad this doc is virtually unknown right now.

  • jajabornixa's rating of the film The Second Night

The very structure of the film reflects the theme of the second night after birth, when the baby gains consciousness of being separate from the mother, as does she. Except Pauwels' mother is dead, or maybe she metamorphosed into this film (the filmmaker and the film being separate) P.S. Does a daughter feel the same- the chaos that a son emerges from; a chaos that he desires to return to and flee simultaneously?
