German pretty much disowned this, his first film, because of disputes with his elder co-director. But it's very fine. Ostensibly pro-Soviet: during the Russian civil war captured general goes over to the Bolshevik side. Yet there are no heroics. The old man's only a conscientious fellow who recognizes the rottenness of the old order, without ever quite accepting the "justice" of the new one. A quiet, beautiful film.
