Zinneman was such a versatile filmmaker. To go from this to a movie like Nun's Story and everything in between is nothing short of masterful. Tracy gives another fine performance, which is no surprise. Cronyn is excellent in his supporting role, which is also no surprise. The film has a dread about it not unlike a Val Lewton chiller, yet unlike his monsters, Nazism was real.
Fascinating take on the chase film. Nazis hunting down Tracy and his fellow escapees and having the arrogance to build these crosses of which they intend to put those escapees on once they're captured. Riveting stuff, intense, and a lot of good work by all involved. Impressive it was made at all considering that concentration camps were scantly addressed on film back then. Powerful stuff.
