A high-concept film that is often as equally tense as it's silly in its suspense and terror, and is as ineffective in its 20+ minute setup as it's lavishly shot in beautiful detail, akin to its threadbare dramatic emotion. Collet-Serra may photograph the shit out of it, but a thin screenplay can't let Lively carry the emotional center on her own, making The Shallows simply a well-oiled, shit-machine.
Bechdel test this, solo performance that. Wasn't this also a Black List screenplay? Funny, considering the story was as gimmicky as it gets, the direction was boring at best, and the creature effects were laughably bad. So, why the hype? Because a marginally talented woman headed a lame thriller with a computer shark? Maybe studios should focus more on content and less on hype, and we'd get better fare.
