One winter in an emergency shelter for the homeless in Lausanne. Every night, the same ritual plays out at the door to this unassuming basement: a dramatic dash for the entrance, a ruckus sometimes occasioning violent altercations…

Verite’s not my favourite, and Melgar, despite attempts, doesn't manage to avoid its problems. But even a contrived impartiality affords the characters a shred of the dignity lost to the brutalizing system they're subject to. And silenced by. Debates about technique seem pedantic. A humane, compelling argument against the so-called logic of austerity & the exploitative neocolonial ideology of immigration control. 3.5
Heartbreaking viewing - a shelter that is stretched to the limit by a flawed system that dehumanises the homeless and leaves many without support, including those that operate the shelter. This is why there needs to be more compassionate political constructs in this world - there is no such thing as the undeserving poor - no one deserves poverty, neither the best nor the worst of us, nor anyone else in between.
Well made but very staged documentary from Fernand Melgar looking at the migrant experience by concentrating on a Swiss shelter over a winter season. Wiseman this certainly isn't. The futility of the operation and the often hopeless situation of the migrant is well felt but the dialogue captured often seems scripted.
Honest documentary about one of the many evils that impacts the lives of the marginalised and underprivileged. The inequalities of this opulent world force many of our brothers and sisters to search for a better future in foreign lands only to find how these deny them of their basic needs, like a basic shelter. Immigration is a global multifaceted phenomenon and this film helps to keep awareness alive.
Grueling. Get's you to feel one overwhelming question, "What's the point?" Just straight up homelessness--no mental illness, no substance use, Nothing to distract from the central point--too many people, not enough beds, no jobs.
Muy buena , una piña al rostro de cualquier persona que la mire.
Excelente como el director muestra la situación de los inmigrantes y de los sin techos, problema que se da en cualquier parte del mundo.
